Directing and the Drawing Board

I had to create a video essay as an introduction to who I am and what I do for a graduate school application that I have been working on for the past few weeks. The only rule was that I couldn’t appear in the video- not even in photographs, but that I should try to show something about my interests or my philosophies.

I decided at last to do a video of a piece of artwork being created. I find it magical to watch an artist work- even being an artist myself. Just because I can draw a picture doesn’t really mean I know how it happens. If I think about it too much I can’t do it.

Anyway here is the finished product. Enjoy 🙂

  1. If motion pictures can inspire and provoke change in the same way as a good book, I can think of 4 or 5 books that changed the way the world goes round. Assuming that change is neither good nor bad, but constant and sometimes pliable, how do you know that you can only live the life in your head in a movie

    • In the grand sense of inspiration and changing-the-world there is nothing saying that the only way to live the life inside one’s head is by turning it into a movie. For myself, directing is the right choice because the things that inspire me and the ideas that make me want to change the world already exist in my head in color, motion, music, dialogue, characters and plot. Perhaps for yourself, this is not as effective as a book, but then again: life is made richer by both movies and books so we should all strive to create as many of both as possible.
