10 Things That I Do When I’m Supposed To Be Doing Something Else

A soothing green plant… for those days when I just wish that I was a vegetable.

I am a world class procrastinator. Given just the right amount of stress I can put off doing just about anything. You might think that this is a negative thing, but you would not BELIEVE how much other stuff I get done when I’ve got one looming task that I’m avoiding. Here are some examples:

  1. Doing the dishes.
  2. Vacuuming the floors.
  3. Updating my bookkeeping spreadsheets and filing old bills.
  4. Writing letters to EVERYBODY.
  5. Preparing tax paperwork.
  6. Napping.
  7. Playing Tetris. (The bass)
  8. Playing Tetris. (The game)
  9. Reading Terry Pratchett (Just one more chapter I swear!)
  10. Providing comfortable seating for one or more cats.

Sometimes I think that the reason that I procrastinate is because the idea of The Big Task (right now it is preparing a film to be premiered) is too unwieldy for me to hold in my head all at once even though each task that I need to accomplish to make The Big Task into The Big Accomplishment are manageable. I may sit down to work on something like a poster design but while I am working on it I will start thinking of all the emails I need to send, the edits I need to make, the people I need to contact, and so on until I can’t concentrate on the poster design and I put it aside to try to address one of the other tasks that I need to do.  The problem is that this means that the poster design is still unfinished, so while I’m working on any of my other tasks the weight of the poster design is still rattling around in my head.  It is like playing To Do List Whack A Mole.

People often advise me to focus on doing one thing at a time. This is very reasonable advice, but much harder to do than it sounds. I suspect that I resort to the procrastination activities because they are individual tasks that can be completed in a short amount of time and aren’t tied to a dozen other things I need to be doing.

So in an effort to make today a productive day I should close here. Post Blog- one thing crossed off my list.

Now for some Tetris.
