Perfect Symmetry

My good and evil personalities come out.

My good and evil personalities come out.

A day or two ago I applied to be an extra along the red carpet of the Academy Awards: an ordeal that involves writing an essay and submitting to a criminal background check, but, hey, it’s the closest I’m likely to get to the Academy Awards for a while.

One of the steps in this process is to submit a passport style photograph that they can put on the pass should I be accepted. Even in this age of digital cameras I don’t often take head-on photographs of myself against a plain background. Once I had it loaded into the computer I realized how different the two sides of my face looked.

In the original photo that I took I had my hair down over one shoulder so I had a bit of a Victor/Victoria look going on, but it made me wonder what my face would look like if it were perfectly symmetrical. And that inspired the pair of photos above. As you can probably guess from the background I had to take a new photo since the one I took for the Academy Awards application was not perfectly head-on and had some unusual shadows down the middle as a result.

To be fair, I have been blessed with reasonably symmetrical features, but no one’s face is exactly symmetrical. This usually isn’t evident until you see the two sides mirrored against one another. The one on the left is the left side of my face perfectly mirrored with itself. The one on the right is the right side of my face perfectly mirrored with itself. No wonder I sometimes feel like two different people: I AM two different people!

The one on the left looks like she would be at home at the Renaissance Faire, reading fantasy books and cutting up little pieces of paper into collages… and maybe fond of chocolate. The one on the right looks like she could tell some dirty jokes over beer and has recently taken up the bass guitar. No wonder I am sometimes in “two minds” about things.

A second version of this project that I did with my hair down.
