One Of The Good Ones

Everything is coming up Milhouse!

Everything is coming up Milhouse!

There are some days when good stuff just happens. Yesterday was one of them.

I’m not saying this to brag or anything: in fact it is kind of the opposite- I have plenty of bad days and they are a lot more fun to vent about. But I wanted to be sure to write about the day(s) when good things happen so that on the bad days I will have something to look back on to remind myself that things won’t always be gloomy.

Yesterday began with an interview for one of the graduate programs that I have applied for. It doesn’t mean that I am accepted by any means, but it means that I’m being considered and that is a big step for me. The interview was great fun and very validating. I won’t go into too much detail, because I realize that the decision-making process isn’t finished yet and I wouldn’t want to go out blabbing on the internet how awesome I did at the interview only to have to eat crow in a month or so when the decisions are actually made.

I also know what it is like to be an applicant who is still “waiting to hear” whether they are even being considered and I hate it when I hear about other people being more successful than me like it’s no big deal. And there are a LOT of other applicants out there. For those of you who are just tuning in now I am pursuing some higher education in filmmaking- directing in particular, and to put things into perspective: it is almost as difficult to get accepted to a graduate program for film directing as it is to get into Harvard Law. There is just that much competition- good competition.

At any rate I had the interview and that made me feel pretty darn good.

Then, at the end of the day to make things even better I learned that I had been selected to be an extra alongside the red carpet for the Academy Awards on Sunday. This is very exciting indeed: I hadn’t heard anything in a long enough time that I was sure I’d been passed over for the opportunity. Becoming an extra for the Academy Awards is not difficult but it is a lot of work. No joke: the application includes an essay and a criminal background check.

I think a little stargazing is good for an individual’s aspirations: standing alongside the red carpet may be a LONG way from being on the red carpet, but it is good to be reminded that it is a manageable distance.
