The Bad Luck Day

I suppose I should be used to "bad luck" by now.

I suppose I should be used to “bad luck” by now.

I don’t like to blame bad luck for my misfortunes but sometimes I just have no choice.

Yesterday was one of those days where I just couldn’t catch a break to save my life:

  • Lost an epic battle of the wills agains the internet while trying to upload a photo to my blog.
  • Ran late to an appointment.
  • Which turned out to be ok because the person I was meeting never showed even though I tried calling.
  • My second meeting got cancelled due to a last minute job interview.
  • My third meeting was also a no-show.
  • Since no one showed up for my third meeting which was at 5pm I had to drive home in rush hour traffic.
  • The first thing I had to do after walking in the front door at home was clean up cat puke.
  • Finally received word from American Film Institute about my graduate application: rejected.
  • Cat spilled the beer.

Individually none of these things were bad, my fault, or even within my control. Cumulatively I managed to keep it together right up until the cat spilled my beer at which point the floodgates opened. It was a strange voodoo kind of day when you are sure that someone, somewhere is sticking pins in you to see how many you can take before you crack. It turns out I will cry over spilled beer.

And there really is no other way to describe it all except to call it bad luck. Once is an incident, twice is a coincidence but when things go wrong over and over again I start getting superstitious.

The question is what do I do now? Will today be better just by the mere fact that yesterday was so improbably frustrating? Will today still be “iffy” because bad luck needs to taper off? Should I risk driving forty five minutes to a morning meeting that hasn’t been confirmed and risk being stood up or do I stay home and get stuff done and risk being the no show myself? (I tried emailing to find out if the meeting was on but so far no response). Do I just go ahead and put tonight’s beer in a sippy cup?

This is my dilemma.
