Smoking Heels

Heeeere's Johnny!

Heeeere’s Johnny!

So it turns out that the sound effect that you hear when watching an airplane landing in a movie doesn’t actually exist in real life. Some sound technicians once got permission to record planes landing on a runway and discovered that in spite of many attempts with many different types of microphone that there simply was no sound associated with the tire hit from an airplane. The sound used in the movies is apparently made up of a compilation of the sound of a sports car turning tight corners on a cement floor mixed with the sound of baby bears from a zoo in Chicago.

I may not know the first thing about how to land a plane or what noise the tires ought to make when they make contact with a runway, but I certainly feel like I can sympathize with how those tires feel to hit the ground at high speeds and be expected to slow to a reasonable speed in a few hundred yards. Two days ago I was watching my sister walk down the aisle. Today I’m turning in a six page paper and sitting through twelve hours of class like it’s no big deal. Considering how much I need to accomplish and how little downtime I’ve had recently I’m actually feeling remarkably level headed.

The trip back to Chicago for my sister’s wedding was a big success which I really need to dedicate a whole post to rather than trying to squeeze in all the details here, although I will indulge in one anecdote:

Twas the night before the wedding and the Bride-To-Be was getting ready for bed. My youngest sister, cast in the role of Maid of Honor, was sharing a room with the Bride to Be and noticed that she had come back from the bathroom wearing plush, fuzzy socks.

“Oh,” she said without realizing what she was saying: “Cold feet?”

The early chill of autumn notwithstanding, there were no cold feet to be had in that household. For myself I feel like my heels are smoking: I was able to pick up with my classes right where I left off, but I’ve pretty much been running at top speed since July with no signs of slowing down any time in the near future.

What I wouldn’t give for some wing flaps!

  1. Great blog today, Manda!

So glad you are feeling on top of things. Julie is still in residence but will fly home tonight. Then, at last, I will shed the hostess role and return to housewife and event planner to tie up all of the lose ends…..smoking heels, indeed!!

    Love you!

P.S. …still hard to believe that three of my children are married – yikes!
