Bachelorette Days

Speaking of Introverts: I’m Palpatine. I get a kick out of that.

A few days ago the Curmudgeonly Lion flew back to Chicago to visit some family. This meant that for several days I was allowed to return to my bachelorette roots. At the beginning this was quite fun: I ate Chinese food and watched the entire third season of Downton Abbey in one sitting without interruption and went to a graduate student Halloween get-together and had the luxury of not dragging myself out of bed at 5:40 in the morning to make lunches. And I loved it. And now I’m over it.

It’s funny: even being an introvert who LOVES time alone I’m just not used to having so much time to myself anymore. I keep feeling like there’s something missing. The house is just too darn quiet. I’m saving all our usual TV shows because it’s just no fun to watch them by myself. I keep going to bed too late because I know I don’t have to get up as early, but I’m not using the time to do anything useful.

After the first few days, life without the Curmudgeonly Lion feels like leaving home without my phone. I could probably function for a day without it: I don’t actually NEED to check Facebook every hour or to play Candy Crush while waiting for the bus, but on the other hand I’ll have to spend the whole day knowing that if I did need it it wouldn’t be there.

For all that, though, I feel like I’m actually handling it pretty well. I’m in the final week before production again which usually means I’m about a phone call away from being hauled off to the happy home, but so far (knockonwood) so good. Maybe just knowing that I have to handle it on my own is enough to give me the resources to do so. It’s not the most comfortable mindset to have to maintain, but it’s good for me.

And on the other side of the coin I am now getting to feel what it must be like for the Curmudgeonly Lion whenever I go out of town to work on a project. I certainly have a greater appreciation for what he puts up with.
