Simple Pleasures

And a run. And a beer.

And a run. And a beer.

There are all these simple pleasures that I forget about when I get busy: Going to a movie. Going for a run. Taking a shower. Taking a nap.  Having a beer.

I like to keep myself busy. Accomplishing things is one of the biggest pleasures that I have, but sometimes it tramples all over the little pleasures and I have to remind myself that it is OK to relax. Fortunately, I have the Curmudgeonly Lion to help remind me as well. It has been Spring Break for almost five days now, but this was the first real day that I didn’t have anything major that needed to be accomplished: the house was clean, the taxes were done, the laundry was done, St Patrick’s Day was celebrated- along with the Curmudgeonly Lion’s birthday. It was finally a day to do nothing.

We went to see “300 Rise of an Empire” at the movie theatre. The movie was gory and action packed without too much plot, character, or dramatic intent to get in the way. We didn’t have a little kid kicking our seats (we sat in the back row), and we didn’t have to yell at anybody to turn off their cell phone, so over all it was a very pleasant afternoon at the movies.

We made it home and I found myself feeling a bit lost without a deadline to keep me moving forward: There were still plenty of tasks that needed to be addressed- I just didn’t feel like doing any of them.

“This R-2 Unit has a bad motivator.” I joked to the Curmudgeonly Lion.

“So take a nap.” He replied.

So I did.

It has been a long time since I’ve been in the habit of napping. I’m completely out of practice, but that’s OK: I don’t mind putting in the time.

Thanks to Daylight savings time it was still light out when I woke up. I decided it would be good to go for a run since that too is another task that I have fallen out of the habit of doing regularly. I typically like to run right as the sun is going down so that I can avoid having to put on sunscreen, but it was still pretty bright by the time I got out the door. It was not my easiest or fastest run, but it still felt good.

So I came home, had some delicious dinner, had a leftover Guinness from St Paddy’s Day, and had a shower. Really, the only thing I still need to do to make my day complete is to write this post. I’m shamefully out of practice with my writing and just trying to gather my thoughts to put them into words isn’t as easy as it once was so I’m sure this isn’t my most inspired writing, but I’m sure it will come back to me with practice.

  1. Sounds like a smashing day–especially the nap part. Peace and best, John
