Days Full

Just wait 'til I Tweet about this...

Just wait ’til I Tweet about this…

For having had such a full day, I’m finding it surprisingly difficult to think of things to write about. Sometimes, when I can’t think of a topic, I ask myself: “What is one interesting thing that happened to me today?” And sometimes, on days like today, I may have had an interesting and productive day and still have nothing much to say about it.

I began reading Marcus Aurelius’ “Meditations” over breakfast. Stoicism seems like a philosophy that I can get behind:

  • Don’t whine.
  • Don’t make excuses.
  • Stay cheerful in the face of struggle by accepting it as something you can’t change.
  • Stay healthy.
  • Do things because they need to be done, not because they make you look good.
  • Treat people as equals.
  • Concentrate.

It’s the Roman Empire’s version of being a Jedi. I’ve always wanted to be a Jedi.

But I am not a Jedi yet. And I’m not a Stoic either since one of the guidelines Marcus Aurelius sets down in the very first chapter is “don’t complain about being busy all the time and use it as an excuse for not getting things done” which is something that I do all the time. This is especially true when I’m in production on a film or when I’m in classes. It was an excuse that I used a lot over the spring and it’s probably time that I grew out of it, but I know that it is going to be hard work to do so. When I spend a lot of time focused on an activity like producing it takes a lot of energy to switch gears to an activity like writing. Sometimes by the end of the day my brain is just worn out from the effort and all I want to do is stare at a wall for a while.

Look at me- whining AND making excuses. LOL. Worst Stoic Ever.

I guess Stoics would probably make pretty bad bloggers since all their posts would pretty much just be “Enh, can’t complain.” You’re not supposed to spread gossip. You’re not supposed to brag. You’re not supposed to complain. Could you imagine a Stoic Perez Hilton? Can you be a blogger and a Jedi?

So anyway, for having had such a full day all I can really think about is Stoicism and Jedi knights, so I’m taking that as a sign that it is time to call it a day. Maybe tomorrow I’ll learn how to actually focus my thoughts.
