Day One

A Long Long Time Ago...

I spent the day making myself a grid so that I can keep track of my progress on my goals for the year. It made me realize that this year is a Leap Year. The last time it was a Leap Year we moved across the country- quite a leap indeed. We left Chicago on Leap day, in fact, so this year will be the first time we will have an official “anniversary” for it.

I suppose it is appropriate that I’ll be finishing up my graduate program this year and leaping into the real world. Looking at the grid of days ahead, I realized that, after May, I was looking into the unknown- August wouldn’t mean classes anymore. It’s amazing how quickly and completely I’ve gotten used to the structure of the academic schedule. I can only hope that I will be able to adapt quickly to the freeform rules of real life without the comfort of planned breaks and regular deadlines and bi-annual progress reports in the form of grades. Uncertainty isn’t comfortable, but I think it’s probably good for me. But no sense in worrying about that now.
