Picnic Party

Ok it tasted better than it looks.

It was my sister Bean’s birthday, so we had her and her husband Steadfast over for dinner. She had requested barbecued beef, to the initial chagrin of the Curmudgeonly Lion who normally avoids barbecue and who, as king of the kitchen, now had to make it ( although he did come around to admitting that this recipe was pretty ok.) The recipe in question was for a family favorite version of barbecue- a slow cooked brisket in sauce, designed to be shredded like a pulled pork. We didn’t commit to a full brisket- it seemed like a bit much for just the four of us, but we did end up committing wholeheartedly to the picnic theme of the meal with coleslaw, corn on the cob, and watermelon to go with it. A good time was had by all.

Although I may have lamented the fact that this celebration was falling right in the middle of my busiest time for the end of the semester, it did turn out to be a blessing to have a day to focus on non-school related things for a while. It forced me to do things like clean the house and change the cat box and take a shower. And it let me focus just on family for a little while and not wear headphones for a day. And there were cupcakes… So there’s that.

So now it’s official: I’m on to my final week of classes. The week after that is finals. The week after that is graduation. Wow. It’s officially the beginning of the end. Or maybe just give end of the beginning.
