Day In The Sun

Sunscreen will save me!

Sunscreen will save me!

We spent the day at the Cinegear Expo on the Paramount lot. It is our third year attending, so a lot of the vendors were already familiar and there wasn’t the same urgency to see and do everything that there has been in previous years, which made for a laid back day. Even so, after a few hours in the sun and the heat, we were ready to call it a day. I’m not accustomed to spending a lot of time in direct sunlight, so I find it especially tiring to stand out in the glare of it all day- even with a generous full-body coat of 70 spf sunscreen to fight off the radiation burns, delicate little flower that I am.

By three in the afternoon we were having lunch in the shade, drinking ice tea and thinking that a nap would be a pretty good idea. All that we needed was a pair of rocking chairs. So we went home and closed all the blinds and had a nap for an hour two hours. I didn’t even get to sleep until well after our alarm went off for us to get up- it was as if the cats could sense the exact moment that my heart rate slowed enough to allow me to drift off to sleep to begin scratching to wake me up again. As soon as the alarm went off, they jumped up on the bed and laid down. They do this to me all the time- when will I learn to just set off an alarm when I plan to fall asleep instead of when I hope to get up?

At any rate, I emerged from sleep feeling rested, but also like I’d been hit by a truck. It was still bright and sunny out, which meant it was still early enough to go running. I’d figured that I’d be too tired from a day of walking around Cinegear to feel like running, but having napped, I hardly felt that I still had that excuse. It wasn’t an easy run, but it felt good in the end, and I was glad that I did it.

And then I stepped on the bathroom scale to discover that I’m back up to my highest weight ever- even after a day of sweating in the sun and after going for a run. So I figured I might as well have a beer with dinner. I haven’t had one for weeks, thinking that it would help ease some of the weight off, but… well, in for a penny, in for a pound. I’ll have to build some new habits, clearly, but tonight did not feel like the time to start them.
