Burrito, Books, and a Breakthrough

Oh, and by the way: get back to work.

Oh, and by the way: get back to work.

I told myself I was going to SIT AND DO SOME WRITING today.

Then the Curmudgeonly Lion asked if I wanted to do lunch. So I went. I drove to the place where he works and we walked together to a nearby Chipolte for buy-on-get-one free burritos thanks to a coupon that we’d gotten in the mail. The burrito was so big I couldn’t finish it. I wish I could say this was testament to my self-restraint, but it didn’t seem to be a conscious decision- I just stopped eating before the food was gone. The rest of it is in the fridge. The side of the Chipolte cups were emblazoned with the “Author Series” text, reminding me that I should’ve been home writing. Still, it was a nice weekday lunch-date. Might as well enjoy them while I’ve got the time.

Afterwards I went to the library to return my book. I told myself that I was only allowed to check out three new ones, since that seems to be the limit of my reading ability within the span of a library loan. I still walked out with five: “Orange is the New Black” by Piper Kerman, “The Rosie Project” by Graeme Simsion, “Franz Ferdinand and the Pop Renaissance” by Hamilton Harvey, “System of a Down: Right Here In Hollywood” by Ben Myers, and “Left Brain Right Stuff” by Phil Rosenzweig. An eclectic mix.

When I finally made it home I forced myself to sit and do the writing that I’d promised myself. I was hung up on a particular scene that I needed to write to move the story forward, so I decided to skip it and write the aftermath scene instead. The aftermath scene stalled out (it’s hard to know where a scene needs to go without knowing where it’s coming from) but it did help prompt ideas for the problem scene. I managed to produce about six pages in a sitting, so that felt like progress. Now if only I could manage more than one sitting in a day.

After that it was cleaning house and going for a run- a slightly more motivated run than yesterday. We’ll be getting back up on the house-hunting horse over the weekend, so slowly but surely we are making progress.
