Just So Happens

At least it’s work with a view.

In spite of my better judgement, I took a day gig working as a boom op on a short film over the weekend. Nevermind that it was the last weekend before Christmas, or that I had a house to get in order, gifts to organize and wrap, projects to finish, and a myriad of other things to accomplish before the end of the year. It was paid work. Paid work is paid work. Especially around the holidays when the bills are going to be as fat as prime rib.

It was one of those opportunities that had landed in my lap with enough force that I felt it would be foolish to ignore it. I haven’t been a boom op since grad school, but I recognized the person asking as someone that I respected from the sound department, so if they thought I was up to the task, then who was I to argue? It had been a long time since I’d been on set and a part of me missed it. I could only do one of the four days that they needed, but it was the exact day that their other boom op candidate was unavailable. The pieces were fitting together too neatly to ignore.

So I spent the day at a house up in the hills doing sound for a short film. It turns out that I need to start doing some upper body exercises; holding a heavy boom over my head for long dialogue takes was a test of my personal will, but still- I had a good time and reconnected with some good people. I’ll be interested to see whether this turns out to be one of those strange, pivotal moments in life where something Just So Happens to set important life events in motion.
