Day One

Chicago is nice, and all, but also freezing.

It’s good to be home in Los Angeles. We made it home in the waning hours of 2017 by the light of the nearly full moon. We proceeded to eat, watch a show on television, unpack two of our four bags, and then go to bed without bothering to wait for midnight. We were still on Chicago time. It was already 2018 there. I felt no remorse.

I didn’t hate 2017. It was a rough year, to be sure, but I learned a lot. I might be a different person now from the person that I was this time last year, and I’m still trying to figure out what that means, but at least I feel less surprised.

New year’s day has lived up to its promise of fresh starts in unexpected ways: my old contacts dried out overnight and needed to be replaced. My deodorant crumbled during the flight and needed to be replaced. The electric toothbrush head was due to be replaced. I couldn’t find my face cream so I opened the new one. I couldn’t find the dental floss so I opened a new one. Small things, but significant. New year, new me.

Mostly we took the day easy: unpacked the rest of our bags, paid the rent, watched TV and TV and TV, did the laundry, grocery shopped, went for a run… Nothing exciting, but a good, productive start to a new year. Tomorrow, it is back to work and the working routine. I’ll look forward to finding out what other new starts are in store.
