Thirteen Weeks

I had this vague idea of finishing the draft of my book by the end of the summer. As Shakespeare says: “Tis a thousand years till then.” And heck- I’ve already got a bunch of the chapters mostly written- all I have to do is fill in the blanks between them. How hard could it be, right?

Thirteen weeks, to be exact. Assuming that we consider Labor Day to be the end of summer.

I think it’s safe to say that the odds are not in my favor. I counted up the number of partial chapters that still need to be completed and divided it by thirteen. It comes to roughly four chapters a week. I felt pretty good about finishing four chapters in a month last month.

So probably not. But maybe. I mean, I do like aspirational goals to challenge myself with like the NaWriMo wordcounts and so on. And it might be good to push myself to not be so precious about getting the words on paper.

As much fun as I’m having writing this story, I’m getting anxious to actually finish it. Why? I’m not sure. I’ve been talking about this novel that I’m writing for years now- Maybe I just want to actually have something to show for it. Maybe I’m anxious to finally have somebody read it from start to finish and to experience the story as a whole.
