Right Hand Day

I’m having a right hand day.

Being right handed, you would think that this would be every day for me, but for the past year I’ve been training myself to write left handed (to the chagrin of my husband, co-workers, and correspondents who have had unwilling front row seats to this particular learning curve). Mostly it’s been going pretty well: my left hand penmanship isn’t perfect, but it is actually slightly more consistent than my right hand penmanship- at least when I write in cursive. So I actually prefer the look of my left handed handwriting and make an effort to use it as much as possible.

But I’m still not very fast.

I can write twice as fast with my right hand, and in more inconsistent conditions like on the bus or on small scraps of paper or uneven surfaces. I can keep notes in (almost) real time, and can jot down ideas when I need to capture them quickly. I’m still definitely more dominant with my right hand.

The bottom line is: I vacillate back and forth between hands, and most days I’m in the habit of reaching for my pen with my left hand unless I actually need the speed and versatility of my right hand.

Except for today.

Today, my right hand was The Boss. Whenever I reached for my pen, my right hand was the one to snap it up.

So what?

Right? (No pun intended). It doesn’t seem like it should be a big deal, except that it has been messing with my brain. Have you ever heard the expression “to be in two minds” about something? Well, nothing throws this into sharper relief than switching up which hand you write with. And the two minds in my brain are evidently Having Words at the moment.

I wish I knew what it was about. I mean, it’s my brain after all. But, alas, no: it is working on something behind closed doors at the moment and i I’m just going to have to wait and be surprised as usual.

So… That’s me: how was your day?

  1. Is it easy(ish?) to learn how to write left-handed? I’ve always wanted to learn and can actually write moderately well with my left hand, but not as well with my right hand.
