Half Step

One and a half.

My current writing speed is one and a half chapters per week. And that’s pretty good, but I can do better.

Hey, the month isn’t over yet! Don’t give up the fight! My ambition screams, but the chances that I’ll be able to turn out ten more pages by tomorrow is achingly slim: it’s a chapter that I need to create out of *nearly* whole cloth. I have an opening scene, and the following chapter is almost entirely competed: so I know where I’m coming from and I know where I need to go, I just don’t know how I’m going to get there from here yet.

I realize that I write about writing a lot lately, but that’s because that’s what has been taking up most of my brain space. Writing a novel is by far the most ambitious and time consuming writing project that I’ve ever taken a stab at. The screenplays that I wrote were sprints: projects that I was able to finish a draft of in a month or six weeks. Now I have to sustain focus and momentum across seasonal changes, mood swings, and all the political joys of life in 2018.

It is using a lot of bandwidth.

But it is coming along slowly but surely, and as much as I lament the pace I’m trying to enjoy it too since the frustrations usually lead me to interesting discoveries that are thrilling in their own right. Ah writing: a joy unto itself.
