Flit

For instance, this was me trying to finish putting up decorations and realizing the decorative candles had melted from pine trees into direwolves.

So I didn’t end up going to the Korean Spa. Instead, I stayed at home and watched “Mulan” while drinking wine and ended up crying like a little baby. What is it about kids movies that makes me cry so hard? I certainly didn’t cry that much when I was actually a kid.

At any rate, I stayed in and then proceeded to stay up too late. In the morning when I finally dragged myself out of bed, I resolved to stay in and putter around the house until I had to go babysitting. My mind was filled with a thousand loose ends. I couldn’t concentrate on anything, and kept finding myself flitting from task to task as they caught my eye. Making coffee took nearly twenty minutes because it also involved emptying the compost bucket, emptying the dish drainer, and starting a load of laundry. I tried to make scrambled eggs for breakfast and managed to mess them up. How does one mess up scrambled eggs? By reorganizing all the dish towels in the linen closet, that’s how.

The whole day has been like that. I’ll start one task- say, putting away laundry, which causes me to go into the bedroom, which reminds me that the duvet cover needs to be washed because the cat vomited on it, which will bring me to the kitchen where I’ll notice some Tupperware that needs to be put away, which leads me to the cabinet which reminds me the spices need organizing, which makes me take out all the empty spice jars, which makes me decide to soak off all the labels… And so on.

The spice cabinet looks nice at least.

I wasn’t sure when I was going to get to run, so I decided to run over to Bean’s place to babysit instead of driving. So that worked out pretty well although it meant running in the middle of the day and with the extra weight of a cell phone and keys. And then being sweaty. But at least I got it done without getting sidetracked. And now some of my distraction seems to have burned off: I was able to sit and take notes for my writer’s group meeting tonight, and of course now I’m blogging.

I’ve been so wrapped up in Big Ticket projects that have been requiring large chunks of my undivided attention, that the little things have been building up around the edges of my life for a long time now: Halloween costumes that still haven’t been put away, for instance. Or mending that was started but not finished. Or taking clean clothes out of dry cleaning bags. Changing the batteries in the smoke detectors. Etc. A hundred little details that I’ve simply ignored until today.

So it was a detail day, but I’m feeling pretty good about it now. Hopefully more progress to come.
