First Blood

Well, it’s official, I’m a real writer: I’ve written a novel, sent out a query, and gotten my first rejection.

After yesterday’s frustration directed towards life, the universe, and everything, you might think that today was a bad day to be getting bad news, but I felt ok about it and so far I still do. The email was waiting for me when I first woke up, so it didn’t ambush me in the middle of my day, and it was about the nicest, gentlest, most polite rejection letter that you can imagine. The agent in question didn’t feel they connected with the work strongly enough to be prepared to rep it. Simple. Elegant. Ten out of ten: would be rejected by this agent again.

So now on to the next query.

I feel petty optimistic- I’m pleased to have gotten a response so quickly. Based on some of the things that I’ve read, I feel like I might be pretty lucky to have gotten a response at all- some submission sites make it clear that *extreme Miranda Priestly voice* they receive far too many submissions to respond to every single one, so if you haven’t heard in X-many weeks you may consider it a pass. *dismissive wave of hand*

So I feel like I’m off to a good start.
